FAIRVIEW, Tenn. -- An eighth-grade boy who was doing a conditioning workout for soccer has collapsed and died in a Middle Tennessee school gym.
Williamson County Director of Schools Mike Looney told The Tennessean he couldn't release the boy's name until teachers were alerted and counselors were called to be on hand Thursday morning at Fairview Middle School.
Looney said it wasn't clear whether the youth died Wednesday at the school or later at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
Looney said the boy's death would devastate the area there the school is located, which he described as "an extremely tight community."
The soccer training was being conducted after the regular school day had ended.
